Why is a root canal necessary and what is involved?
Root canals, also known as endodontic therapy, are done when the nerve or pulp of the tooth becomes infected and inflamed due to dental decay, a cracked or broken tooth, or an injury. During a root canal treatment, the pulp of the tooth is removed and all the canals and the pulp chamber of the tooth are filled and sealed to prevent bacteria from entering. To confirm that a tooth requires root canal treatment, we will take a digital x-ray of the root and check for cold sensitivity. Most teeth that have undergone a root canal require a crown to protect them from fracturing since the interior of the tooth has been compromised.

How long will a root canal take and is it painful?
In general, most root canals require two appointments that last about 90 minutes per session. However, we utilize rotary endodontics, so instead of traditional stainless-steel manual files, we use electrically-powered instruments to perform the root canal. The electric hand tool is equipped with a tip constructed out of nickel titanium, which is five times more flexible than stainless steel. The flexibility and unique movement of the nickel-titanium instrument allow it to be inserted deeply into a curved root canal without stretching or damaging the passageway. Rotary endodontic instruments are more reliable and afford a lower risk of complications. Quieter, faster, and more comfortable than traditional tools, they make root canals easier on our patients, which is very important to us.
